Portrait of our Dutch King Willem-Alexander.
King’s Night (Koningsnacht) is celebrated on April 25th, the evening before King’s Day. Across the Netherlands, cities come alive with street parties, live music, and nightlife all dressed in orange — especially in The Hague, where the festivities are legendary.
April 26th marks King’s Day (Koningsdag) in the Netherlands, a national holiday celebrating the birthday of our King Willem-Alexander. It’s a day of festivities, and celebration of Dutch culture and unity, with people dressing in orange to show their national pride.
‘Oranje Boven’ is a Dutch expression of national pride, referring to the royal House of Orange-Nassau, symbolizing loyalty to the Dutch monarchy and celebration of King’s Day. The phrase originated in the 16th century during the Dutch Revolt, when it was first used to express support for William of Orange, the leader of the fight for Dutch independence from Spanish rule. Over time, it became a symbol of allegiance to the monarchy and is now commonly used to celebrate the royal family and national unity.
